A Morning at Morrison Springs

Image
So, I get a call from a fellow photographer, saying, he's thinking about taking a trip out to Morrison Springs (Walton County, FL) in the morning (about an 1 1/2 hour drive). Well of course I jump at the chance to shoot at a new location. We were looking to capture morning light on the cypress trees and were also hoping for a little mist on the water, but we would have to leave early, how early, 4:00am early! That equated to getting up at 3:00am to get ready and get over to his place. But if you want the good light and shots, sacrifices have to be made....lol We roll into the springs (County Park) an hour before sunrise to scout the area for where and what we wanted to shoot. Much to our surprise, the area was not that big, with the only good shooting location along 50' stretch of boardwalk. We both scoped out several compositions we liked, and it was just a matter of waiting for the light. The above photo was the first one I spotted. I really liked the shape of the tree and ...

A Morning Shoot at the Beach

Image
Today was a morning just like any other morning could be, the only difference is, I woke up early for some reason. It was around 4:30 when my eyes sprung open, and I was awake (dang it), oh well, I thought I'd check the weather look outside and see if it would be worth going out for a sunrise shoot. Well, I did and it was, (of course nothing is guaranteed). I made myself a coffee to go, grabbed my camera bag and headed out the door. The beach is only a 10-15 minute drive from the house and with sunrise at 6:30 I knew I had plenty of time to scout out a location. Now, you would think, heck that's easy, just hit the beach and start shooting.....well, not quite. You see, the beach changes every day, the way the waves break, where they break, the tides, locations of tides pools and how the water flows onto the beach. So you need to actually hit the beach and start walking the shoreline until you come across that special area that may make a good shot. You get out the camera, take ...

Shooting the Milky Way

Image
Tuesday evening I had the pleasure of teaching a class "Shooting the Milky Way" for members of the Emerald Coast Camera Club. Last year I became interested in photographing the Milky Way after seeing many great images from around our area. With the hot summer days here in NW Florida, it's a perfect way to beat the heat and get out with my camera. I did some research on the subject and tried my hand at it, finding out that it really isn't all the difficult. The hard part, is in the post processing and finding that right technique to make the Milky Way shine. After lots of trial and error, I finally came across one that works for me. So this year, with all my new found knowledge, I struck out several times and ended up with (what I think ) are some pretty good shots. Now for me, that also means finding an interesting foreground that complements the Milky Way in the picture. Here along the coast, that means, the local pier, beach pavilions, interesting shaped dunes, et...

Navarre Beach Glow

Image
Well, I thought I kick off this blog with my latest creation, Navarre Beach Glow. We have been having rain and cloudy sky's, pretty much every day for the last week or so, due to Hurricane Laura, so sunsets have been lackluster to say the least. Now, before we get to far, you will notice a recurring theme in most all the blog posts and that is "last minute" for sunset shoots, heck and many others to boot....lol. Yesterday, 30 Aug, the clouds finally started to clear a little, since our house faces west and I have a pretty clear view of the western sky, I noticed what mite be a break in the clouds near the horizon (critical for good sunset color), so a last minute decision was made to head out and see what I could find. Now, many times (even during last minute shoots) I have an idea for a shot in mind, depending on how the sky looks. This time as I headed out, I had no idea, other than to head towards Navarre proper. While heading that way (6 miles) I settled on Navarre p...
